Iron ore is a rock from which metallic iron can be extracted. About 98% of the mined iron ore is used to make steel. Many railroads around the great lakes have unit trains that transport mined iron ore to transport operate on all popular via barge for processing. These trains are very distinctive with train brands of track sets of small cars carrying very heavy loads of dense iron ore.
